Safari at Sediba: 10 of Africa’s greatest beasts you’ll see

See the Big 5 and many more in their natural habitats!

Tucked away in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, only a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg, is where you’ll find Sediba Luxury Safari Lodge. This pocket of majestic natural beauty offers some of the most spectacular safari experiences to be found in Southern Africa.

Savour the comfort of a luxury getaway paired with the exhilaration of seeing some of Mother Nature’s most magnificent beasts – up close and personal! Here’s what you can expect to see on a game drive at Sediba:

  1. Rhinoceros
The magnificent rhino is a gentle yet hulking beast, famous for its two C-shaped, curving horns. Both the White Rhino and the Black Rhino can be found in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Sadly, both subspecies are endangered due to illegal poaching for their prized horns. We are proud to be guardians to these magnificent beasts, and our wardens protect them to ensure the survival of the rhinoceros for generations to come.

  1. Elephant
The enormous African elephant is unmistakable: these massive grey herbivores move with surprising stealth through the African bush, searching for juicy leaves to graze on.

Elephant herds are led by wise and experienced matriarchs, mother elephants who know where to find grazing and drinking water. Often spotted in family groups, it is a unique experience to be in the presence of an African elephant.

  1. Lion
Lions are the largest carnivores in Africa, and spotting these powerful hunters is a special moment. Meet the King himself, and snap a few pictures of his magnificent bushy mane.

The lady lions are also here to meet you – the females are the real hunters, fast and fierce! See them feasting on a fresh kill or with their baby cubs, as we see the circle of life in action.

  1. Buffalo
These charcoal-grey herbivores are famous for their double curved horns, and their notorious ill temper! Buffalo are enormous bison-like animals and can be seen in large herds of many hundreds as they search the African bush for luscious leaves and grasses to graze on.

  1. Bat-eared fox
Tiny but mighty, this small fox is an endangered species. These foxes have found the perfect home with us towards the Northern edge of the Sediba reserve area. Try to spot these shy and adorable nocturnal animals – you’ll know them by their very large, white ears used to listen for their prey of insects and small reptiles.

  1. Leopard
This big cat is well known for its stealthy hunting skills, and it’s ability to spring up into trees with powerful grace and ease. Leopards are famous for their ability to camouflage themselves in the African bush, and seeing them in their natural habitat is considered a remarkable sighting!

  1. Wild dog
African wild dogs are also known as the “painted dog” for their mottled coats of black, brown and black. These pack animals have strong social bonds with each other, and are often seen trotting along the dirt roads of Sediba, on the lookout for fresh prey.

Dog-lovers will recognise their soft black eyes and big ears, and we are fortunate to have these endangered animals thriving in our reserve.

  1. Giraffe
The towering giraffe with their long necks is one of the most wonderful (and unbelievable!) sights in the African bush. Sit quietly in our open game vehicle and spend some time with these sky-high herbivores: admire their beautiful caramel hides and watch them reach to the tops of the tallest trees!

  1. Cheetah
We are delighted to host the world’s fastest land animal at Sediba: the lightning-fast cheetah. These lithe feline hunters can reach speeds of up to 90km/h as they chase down nimble-footed smaller antelope such as impala and springbok.

  1. African Clawless Otter
At Sediba we are blessed to be the home to another small endangered mammal – the clever and crafty African Clawless Otter. These otters can be found along the river beds at Sediba, and are known for the ingenious hunting style using their webbed paws, where they feast on frogs, fish and freshwater crabs.

Join us on a safari to remember at Sediba Luxury Safari Lodge. Take in the wide-open spaces of the African bush with our team of expert trackers and wardens, and spend time in nature with some of these magnificent animals – both big and small!
